Three resistor are used in this device as shown in figure (8). R1,R2 can be replaced by two lamps (L1,L2 ). If there is an earth leakage on the positive side then light of L1 will be decreased according to the resistance of earth path and will be off in the case of soil earth path . In the opposite, the light of L2 will be increased .
